SR 679 (Pinellas Bayway) Structure E, Design-Build

FR Aleman designed a new Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) that met the current FDOT standards. The main goal was to design ITS that allowed for the installation of CCTV cameras to provide the required 100% coverage of the entire bridge, the roundabout, bridge approaches, and the connecting roadways. The CCTVs were designed to include Intercoastal Waterway under the bridge and provide a continuous high-definition view of the traffic conditions within the entire bridge waterway within the project limits. FR Aleman provided an ITS design that integrated with all associated elements of the bridge, including the overall aesthetics. The design considered functionality and reliability of the system, which included easy and safe accessibility to ITS devices, such as cabinets. The ITS equipment was designed with a robust communication network and included a power service subsystem. The ITS communication subsystem was designed using a 48-count fiber optic cable (FOC) that was installed along SR 679 (Pinellas Bayway) between Madonna Boulevard and SR 682 (54th Avenue S). The 48 FOC connected to the SR 682 FOC backbone at the intersection of SR 682 and SR 679. FRA used 12 SM FOC drop cables to connect the ITS devices to the new SR 679 48 FOC backbone. All ITS devices were connected following a “leap-frog” network architecture, so that no adjacent ITS network devices are connected to the same fiber pair ring. The ITS network connections for this project were consistent with FDOT Traffic Management Center requirements and goals.
